Synopsis

Un matin, Mai Gang, le père de la réalisatrice, se lance dans la fabrication d’une carte qui, au fil des semaines, contamine le sol du salon familial. L’itinéraire de son départ clandestin vers Hong Kong refait surface.

Ce film de parole revient sur les évasions massives de la Chine communiste dans les années 1970. Tourné dans l’intimité de l’appartement familial, le film fait trancher la tranquillité du lieu avec le récit qui s’y déploie : sur le sol du salon l’immensité de la mer, et à la table à manger le danger politique. C’est par l'hyper-concret de cette carte artisanale, accompagnée par la recréation des objets et gestes nécessaires à la traversée, que Mai Gang nous donne à voir l’impossible de l’action entreprise il y a cinquante ans.

This dialogue-driven film looks back at the mass exodus from Communist China during the 1970s. Shot within the quiet intimacy of the family home, the film strikes a sharp contrast between the domestic calm and the story being told: the vastness of the sea occupies the floor, while political peril sits at the dining table. Through the physical reality of this handmade map, accompanied by the recreation of the objects and gestures required for the crossing, Mai Gang makes tangible the impossibility of the journey undertaken fifty years ago.
